The Changeover: Film adaptation of Margaret Mahy young adults’ novel, set in Christchurch and starring Erana James, Melanie Lynskey, Lucy Lawless, Kate Harcourt and British actor Timothy Spall. Directed by Stuart McKenzie and Miranda Harcourt. A troubled teenager must “change over” and become a witch in order to save her little brother from an evil ancient spirit.
A Date for Mad Mary: Mary comes home from prison to find her best friend is getting married and she is to be maid of honour. Denied a “plus one” invitation because her friend says she probably couldn’t find a date. Mary sets out to prove her wrong.
HP 48 Hour Film Competition: A showing of the local finalists.
Hampstead: Real-life story of a homeless man who built a shack on the edge of London’s Hampstead Heath inspired this film. A widow (played by Diane Keaton), struggling to meet her apartment’s service charges, forms a relationship with a tramp (Brendan Gleeson) who has created a well-tended smallholding in the grounds of a disused hospital.

Battle of the Sexes: Emma Stone is women’s tennis great Billie Jean King and Steve Carell is hustler and former Wimbledon champion Bobby Rigg in a film based on their landmark match. The “battle of the sexes” was one of the most watched televised sports events of its time.
Flatliners: Sequel to the 1990 film of the same name. Twenty-eight years after Nelson Wright (Kiefer Sutherland) survived his experiments of near-death experiences, a group of medical students try the same procedure, with the help of theorist Dr Courtney Holmes (Ellen Page). But once they take their turns, side-effects and secrets of the past haunt them.
Captain Underpants: Animated movie about two comic-book-writing friends who hypnotise their mean-spirited school principal into believing he is Captain Underpants, whose main power is extreme stupidity.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle: Sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service. The agents need to team up with their American counterparts, Statesman, to counter a worldwide threat. Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong and Sophie Cookson return, and Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Elton John, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges join the cast.
The Lego Ninjago Movie (3D, 2D): Computer-animated comedy martial arts spin-off from The Lego Movie. Story focuses on Lloyd Garmadon, leader of a group of teenagers being trained by an old ninja master to protect the city.
The Emoji Movie (3D, 2D): Gene lives in a digital city inside the phone of his user. A multi-expressional emoji, Gene wants to be normal like his parents, but faces obstacles.
Victoria & Abdul: Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and young Indian clerk Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) form a friendship that the royal household and inner circle try to destroy. Also stars Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith and Michael Gambon.
American Assassin: A Cold War veteran (Michael Keaton) takes a CIA black ops recruit (Dylan O’Brien) under his wing, and they must investigate random attacks on military and civilian targets.
It: Seven children are terrorised by a mysterious being, and face their personal demons in the process. Adapted from the 1986 Stephen King novel.
