At the flicksDOME CINEMA
Spookers: Florian Habicht documentary about the horror theme park occupying the old Kingseat psychiatric hospital in Auckland. Former sheep farmers Beth and Andy Watson, and daughter Julia, are the proprietors of the sprawling four-location destination where actors scare the daylights out of visitors.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: Corrosive mass threatens 28th-century space metropolis housing species from a thousand planets. Space agents Major Valerian and Sergeant Laureline are sent to investigate. Film based on a French sci-fi comic series. Luc Besson wrote the screenplay, co-produced and directed.
In Between (Bar Bahar): Three Arab-Israeli women share an apartment in Tel Aviv and try to balance their traditions with the modern world and live in between the two. Breezy “dramedy” focuses not on politics but on daily life to show social change.
The Free Man: Documentary directed by Toa Fraser (The Dead Lands) and built around encounters between Kiwi freestyle skier Jossi Wells and The Flying Frenchies, known for their base jumps, wingsuit flying and tightrope walks.

Victoria & Abdul: Story of a friendship late in the reign of Queen Victoria (Judi Dench). Young clerk Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) travels from India to take part in the Queen’s golden jubilee, and becomes a favourite of the elderly monarch. The two forge an alliance that the Queen’s household and inner circle try to destroy. Also stars Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith, Simon Callow and Michael Gambon.
mother!: A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive, disrupting their tranquil existence. Psychological horror film written and directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. Apparently not for the squeamish.
American Assassin: A Cold War veteran (Michael Keaton) takes a CIA black ops recruit (Dylan O’Brien) under his wing, and they must investigate random attacks on military and civilian targets. They join forces with a lethal Turkish agent to stop an operative who wants to start a world war. Based on a Vince Flynn novel.
It: Seven children are terrorised by a mysterious being, and face their personal demons in the process. Adapted from the 1986 Stephen King novel. Stars Bill Skarsgard as It/Pennywise/Bob Gray.
Girls Trip: Four lifelong girlfriends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival and rediscover their wild sides. Stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish.
My Year with Helen: Filmmaker Gaylene Preston follows former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark as she runs for the job of United Nations Secretary General.
Wind River: Elizabeth Olsen plays a rookie FBI agent who teams up with a game tracker (Jeremy Renner) to investigate a murder on a native American reservation.
American Made: Tom Cruise plays a pilot and drug smuggler recruited by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Dunkirk: The Dunkirk story, directed by Christopher Nolan. Unknown actors in lead roles, but Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance also star.
