Textiles Alive

For their latest exhibition, four textile artists have set themselves the challenge to focus on creating oversized fabric artworks all presented in their uniquely individual styling. The artists contributing to this fabric fiesta are Irene Smith, Morva Thompson, Lina Marsh and Deb Williams. Tairāwhiti Museum, until June 12.

Harikoa te Ngakau

The mahi in this exhibition was influenced by observations weaver Michelle Hinekura Kerr made while spending time with her whānau during the summer break. Tairāwhiti Museum, until May 8.

Shine On

Bronwyn Furlan and Kathy Grimson have enjoyed many years of quilting and are showcasing their collection at Tairāwhiti Museum, until May 1.

Happening

French film, set in 1963, about a gifted 23-year-old literature student who becomes pregnant and wants an abortion. The law will not allow it, and the film follows her quest to secure an abortion before her pregnancy becomes obvious.

Night Raiders

A New Zealand/Canadian co-production set in a 2043 North America where cities are controlled by the military, and children are property of the state. A desperate Cree woman joins an underground band of vigilantes to infiltrate a state children’s academy and get her daughter back.

It Snows in Benidorm

Peter is given early retirement from his bank job in Manchester and decides to seek out his brother Daniel in Benidorm, Spain. Daniel owns a nightclub but has vanished. Two women Peter meets cause him to re-examine his life.

Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful

Trailblazing photographer Helmut Newton had a defining impact on fashion and art. Writer-director Gero von Boehm uses interviews with some of the late photographer’s subjects to shed light on Newton’s art.

The Lost City

A novelist (Sandra Bullock) and the cover model for her books (Channing Tatum) must escape the clutches of a billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) and find a fabled lost city of riches. Brad Pitt enjoys a swashbuckling contribution.

The Bad Guys

Animated film in which criminal animals pretend to mend their ways to earn more lenient treatment. Features voices of Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

American science-fiction black comedy action film loved by critics. Stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, James Wong and Jamie Lee Curtis. A woman being audited by the IRS must connect with versions of herself in parallel universes to help prevent the destruction of them all.

Ambulance

A decorated veteran, needing money to pay his wife’s medical bills, teams up with his adoptive brother to steal $32 million from a bank. When their getaway goes wrong, they hijack an ambulance carrying a wounded policeman and an emergency medical technician. They try to escape while keeping their hostages alive. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Last Bus

Timothy Spall plays a pensioner whose wife (Phyllis Logan) has just died. He travels the length of Great Britain on local buses, using his bus pass, to take his wife’s ashes from John o’ Groats in the northeast to Land’s End in the southwest, where they met.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. He entrusts magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards and witches to stop Grindelwald.

Rabbit Academy

When the Easter rabbits’ magical “golden egg” turns black, Max and friends must find their superpower to protect Easter. Leo, leader of a gang of city rabbits, wants to destroy Easter, and tricks a family of foxes into stealing all the Easter eggs. Now Max must team up with a fox to save Easter.

Further adventures of the supersonic hedgehog, with a cast that includes Jim Carrey and the voice of Idris Elba.

Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his fate, Dr Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) takes a desperate gamble. At first it seems to be a radical success, but a darkness inside him is unleashed.

The Duke

In 1961, a 60-year-old taxi driver steals Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from London’s National Gallery. His ransom notes say he will return the painting if the government invests more in elder care. Stars Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Matthew Goode and Fionn Whitehead.
