THEATREUnity Theatre Auditions: Gisborne playwright and novelist Jackie Davis (Whether I Fall) brings her latest work to life. Set in the final days of World War I, A Time Like This follows Douglas Chapman, a war artist, who returns to Auckland from the battlefields of France. Auditions at Unity Theatre club rooms, 209 Ormond Road; January 22 (3pm).

Grumpy Old Women: Game of Crones: Plenty of laughs, poorly supported breasts and unreliable statistics in this fantasy comedy. War Memorial Theatre; March 28, 2017 (8pm).

At the flicksODEON MULTIPLEXThe Catch: Director Simon Mark-Brown used his own money to make this New Zealand film about cheating in an annual fishing contest on the Kaipara Harbour. Based on a true story concerning a contest “up north”, the film boasts an appealing cast, great soundtrack, gorgeous scenery, amiable humour and a message about the perils of overfishing. Collateral Beauty: A successful advertising executive (Will Smith), retreating from life following personal tragedy, writes letters to Love, Time and Death. When he gets personal responses, he begins to understand how these constants interlock in a life fully lived. Also stars Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet and Michael Pena.

Ballerina: Animated film of a poor orphan girl in 1880s France who runs away from a rural orphanage to Paris at the time of the construction of the Eiffel Tower and chases her dream of becoming a ballerina.

Monster Trucks: Combination live action/animated comedy about a high school senior (Lucas Till) who builds a monster truck from scrapped cars, then finds an unlikely subterranean friend with a taste and talent for speed.

La La Land: A musical comedy-drama that won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Picture of 2016. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are a musician and an aspiring actress who fall in love in Los Angeles.

Red Dog: True Blue: Film exploring events leading up to Red Dog’s discovery on the road to Dampier, and his ultimate rise from ordinary dog to Australian legend.

Assassin’s Creed: A criminal is rescued by the modern-day incarnation of the Templar Order and becomes entwined in a search for the apple of Eden. He learns he is descended from a member of a secret group who opposed the Order.

Passengers: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are space-age travellers awakened from suspended animation 90 years early. As they fall in love, they learn the ship is in danger and the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers depend on them.

Moana: Disney musical comedy adventure featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison and Jemaine Clement. Spirited teenager Moana sets out to prove herself a master wayfinder and meets demigod Maui. Together they face ocean adventure.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: The first Star Wars Anthology film, this stand-alone story is set shortly before the events of the original Star Wars.

Sing: Animated comedy about a singing competition organised to try to save a music theatre from closure. Features over 85 classic songs and a stellar voice cast.

DOME CINEMACaptain Fantastic: A father dedicates his life to bringing up his six children to be extraordinary adults. But a family tragedy forces them to leave their self-created paradise deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest and go back to the outside world.

A Man Called Ove: Film written and directed by Hannes Holm, based on Fredrik Backman’s book of the same name. Rolf Lassgard plays Ove, a townhouse neighbourhood’s sullen and world-weary prefect, whose life is turned around when a boisterous family move in next door. After the neighbours’ car knocks over a letterbox, friendship develops. Swedish entry for Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards.

VISUAL ARTSEXHIBITIONSTupara Gallery: Whitingia Exhibition: Contemporary Gisborne artists, including Walter Dewes, Tawera Tahauri, Henare Tahuri, Mokaraka Phil Berry and Nick Tupara come together in this summer exhibition. January 11 to February 20.
