Garden surrounds have never been more environmentally friendly than at the Tairawhiti Environment Centre’s weekend workshop.

The willow weaving workshop brought more than 40 women together to learn how to weave willow into circular garden surrounds.

The workshop was put on by Annette Simpson at her property.

Environment centre administrator Heera Rigney said the event was very popular.

“It was really popular last year. We had about 25 people.

“Because we had such a beautiful day this year, we did not want to refuse anyone so we ended up with more than 40 women.

“There were all ages and women from all walks of life — it was just fantastic.”

The willow was sourced from sites around Gisborne before the workshop.

“Like most things, most of the work is in the preparation so the actual weaving itself did not tale that long.

“It was very encouraging to see people inspired and making new friends. It was a really cool event.”

The centre’s next event will be a herbal oil and vinegar infusion workshop.
