REMEMBERED IN ART: The late Kleoblu is missed by her owners but her soulful facial expression is captured in a portrait by talented, local animal portrait artist, Torri Stewart.

REMEMBERED IN ART: The late Kleoblu is missed by her owners but her soulful facial expression is captured in a portrait by talented, local animal portrait artist, Torri Stewart.

Animal portrait artist Torri Stewart draws largely on photographs to draw expressive likenesses of people’s companion animals.

“Quite a few of my portraits are used to keep the memory of an animal alive after they have passed on,” says Stewart.

“It’s often heartbreaking hearing stories from the owners and wonderful to hear how happy their pets have made them,”

Stewart welcomes inquiries about her service, Four-legged Art.

“When people lose their pets they often don’t have great photos to work from to create a portrait but I do the best I can with the pictures they have.”

Stewart’s technique has evolved and she now often uses watercolour pencils to get a base level of colour that is much richer.

“I would love to learn how to use watercolour paints — I’m not trained at all, just self-taught — but am looking for someone who could teach me. I’ve recently joined the Gisborne Artists Society too.”

Stewart can be contacted through her Four-legged Art Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/fourleggedart, or email torristewart0@gmail.com
