Colour your world with flowers. They are not just decorative — they provide food for the bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Spring continues to be a delightful frenzy of new foliage, beautiful flowers, sowing and growing. Celebrate the upcoming National Gardening Week by flower-bombing your garden . . . or neighbourhood.

National Gardening Week

It’s all about Flower Power!

Colour your world — or even just your neighbourhood. The call is out to New Zealanders to bring back flowers and create a riot of colour in gardens for National Gardening Week from October 21st – 28th.

Flowers are not just decorative. They provide food for the bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. They also taste good (and look wonderful) in salads and teas and for centuries, flowers have been used to heal.

To get you started with flower-bombing your garden — or an area in your local neighbourhood that needs a splash of colour, Yates is lending a helping hand.

Just register online at Yates.co.nz between 1st and 14th October to receive a free packet of seeds from the Yates flower range, including flowers for colour, flowers for bees and butterflies and flowers that are perfect for picking. And the free seed offer is timed perfectly for the October school holidays to get kids into the garden for hours of flower fun.

National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature.

Whether it’s a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening.

And watch out for details of the winner of the Yates Budding Young Gardener competition, a national search to discover some of New Zealand’s best young gardeners, which will be announced during National Gardening Week.

Spring strawberry care

Strawberries are a fantastic fruit to grow at home, whether in a garden bed, pot or hanging basket. Promote thriving and productive strawberries this month by providing them with lots of nutrients and ample moisture.

Feed each week with Yates Thrive Strawberry & Berry Fruit Liquid Plant Food. It’s a complete plant food that’s boosted with additional potassium, the nutrient that encourages flowering and fruiting. And keep the soil or potting mix moist with regular watering. Applying mulch, such as lucerne or pea straw, around strawberry plants will help to conserve soil moisture and also keep the fruit clean and off the ground.

Pick strawberries regularly to help promote an extended harvest. You may need to protect ripening berries from hungry birds with bird netting or a wire cage. — Courtesy of Yates
