Ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington) is recruited to hunt down and kill The Creator, architect of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), who has developed a  weapon with the power to end the war between humans and the forces of AI . . . in the machines’ favour.

A terminally ill man who goes to Mexico seeking a miracle cure, only to find it’s a con, sets deadly traps to exact revenge on the fraudsters.

■ Uproar

Julian Dennison plays a teenager who doesn’t fit in anywhere in Dunedin at the time of the 1981 Springbok tour. Inspired by the protests and a newfound passion for performance, he embraces his heritage. Also stars Rhys Darby, James Rolleston, Erana James and Minnie Driver.

Sequel to the 2018 film The Nun. Set four years after the ending of the first film, the story follows Sister Irene as she again comes face to face with the demonic force Valak, The Nun, at a boarding school in France.

■ The Equalizer 3

Since giving up life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) finds solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. Now living in southern Italy, McCall discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses, so he becomes his friends’ protector.

■ Nomadland

A woman gives up her home and starts life on the road as a nomad, after the company she worked for shuts down. Oscar winner for best picture, best actress (Frances McDormand) and best director (Chloé Zhao).

■ The Innocent

Comedy crime  film in which a prison theatre teacher marries an inmate in a union that is not well received by the teacher’s adult son, who is suspicious of his stepfather’s  intentions. In French, with subtitles.
