Dungeons & Dragons meets the stage

Queer kids, Dungeons & Dragons and sword fights, She Kills Monsters is by no means your typical Broadway play . . . and young people love it.

Written by Qui Nguyen, She Kills Monsters made its stage debut in 2011, continues to go from strength to strength, and has now made its way to Gisborne.

As high-school teacher Agnes Evans deals with the death of her younger and weirder sister, Tilly, she stumbles upon her Dungeons & Dragons notebook and decides to try out what kept her sister so occupied.

“I have never had this much fun directing a play in my life! This high-energy, fast-paced romp through the world of Dungeons & Dragons is full of heart and lots of laughs,” said managing artistic director Dinna Myers.

As the play carries on and Agnes delves deeper into her quest, the fantasy world and reality begin to collide and mix as Agnes searches to connect with Tilly and realises how much of her sister she never knew.

“When I look for plays to bring to Gisborne, I try and choose at least one each year that deals with an issue that should inspire community conversation. This play is extremely LGTBQ+ positive and deals with the negative impact of bullying in schools and the difficulty some young people still experience in coming out to their families. In this Dungeons & Dragons world, these kids can be whoever they want to be and fully express themselves as the beautiful, strong, and magical souls they are.”

The play features strobe lights and safe, water-based atmospheric effects.

Because of the new Traffic Light System, all attendees must be able to show proof of vaccination.

A 1m social distance between booked parties is required, it will be best to buy your tickets as a group.

While children are welcome, parents should know this play contains adult language and themes. The show has been rated T for Teen.

Showtime is approximately 90 minutes with one 15 minute interval.

Doors open 45 minutes before showtime.
