IN THE STREET: Auckland’s Depot Artspace has listed as one of its emerging cultural icons Gisborne photographer/artist Drew Hill who shot this black and white picture in the 1990s of two Beckettian characters at a Christchurch soup-kitchen table.
Cultural Icons, Depot Artspace’s list of notable New Zealand creatives now includes emerging cultural icons — and among them is Gisborne photographer/artist Drew Hill. The 80 cultural icons interviewed for the list range from photographer Peter Peryer to art collector Sir James Wallace.
Emerging cultural icon Hill is No 78on the list.
Based in Devonport, Auckland, the Depot uses its space for artists to address social issues. Hill held his exhibition In Your Face there in 2015. The show was exactly what it said on the wrapper. Fast food wrappers, some with “takeaway DNA” still stuck to them, were canvasses for Hill’s photographic prints.
In his Emerging Icons interview, Hill talks about projects he has worked on over the past 25 years. Street photography has been a big part of that process.
“I take photos of how I see the world and tell other people’s stories by the use of my camera,” he says on his Depot Artspace page.
