Creating a superbug

MAGNIFY: While The Story of Whirikoka was taking place, another creative challenge across town for children was to produce a superbug within 10 hours. Organised by educators Peter and Ellen Jarratt of Create and Educate, the aim of the artistic exercise was to make a close up study of bugs to get to know their composition. Students such as Georgia Jobson (pictured) and Magda Wojciechowska then used various forms from their study to design a hybrid bug. “The next stage was to supersize their design using collage materials, charcoal, pencils and pastels,” says Peter. “The final stage was to organise the final exhibition and to include bug noises and an incubation room.” Ellen said the children created praying mantises, blue-tongued lizards and huhu grubs all around the studio. “I’m slightly squeamish of bugs but I’m well over that now,” she says. A pop-up exhibition of the students’ work was held in Treble Court. The exhibition was a one-day-only event, coincidentally the life span of a fruit fly. Picture supplied
