GETTING DEEP WITH SUBSET BC: A giant visual effect seems to be about to engulf one of the musicians of bass guitar-driven band Subset BC, who make a return to the Dome courtyard in two weeks’ time. Picture supplied

One day, people will tell their grandchildren about the magical summer night they witnessed bass guitar-driven act Subset BC debut under a starry dome in the Dome courtyard.

The punters who were there that heady night last summer can relive the experience in two weeks time when the dark-groove, cinematic, bass ensemble takes its danceable sound back to the garden.

Known for their unique sound and dance-floor friendly grooves, the Subsetters will once more share a night of original soundscapes, idiosyncratic covers and emergent musical phenomena when they take Courtyard Cosmogony to the Dome Bar’s courtyard. The band’s loungy rhythms draw on musical influences that include funk, breaks, desert-sludge, post-rock, shoe-gaze, house and drum & bass.

Courtyard Cosmogony will be the band’s first public appearance since the winter solstice audio-visual show with Pauly B.

Over the cooler months, Subset BC’s bass men, drummer and keyboard player have honed their craft, practiced their dance moves and prepared some tasty new numbers for a summer twilight airing in their spiritual home. Universes will be born, and outmoded patterns may well fade away, say the trendsetting Subsetters.

The name Courtyard Cosmogony is an apt one, says bass guitar player Charles Barry.

“There’s a co-evolutionary process with our music. There’s an emergent property you couldn’t predict from the sum of its parts. There isn’t anything we’re trying to achieve. Then there’s a guitar harmony where we know when it’s right and when it’s not. It’s genre-less. Whatever we’re performing is being formed before people’s eyes. There’s always an improvisational element. Some pieces are more structured than others, but there’s an inherent real-time element to it.”

Subset BC + DJs Missing Link and Subsekretary along with special guests, the Dome garden, Saturday, 8pm. $10 at the door.
