The Gisborne Civic Brass Band concert on Saturday will feature the auxiliary brass band which includes players who are learners of all ages.

It also includes some more experienced brass band musicians who are learning new instruments and broadening their skills.

“In this case it gives the musicians a chance to play other instruments with less challenging music to master,” says Gisborne Civic Brass Band musical director Chris Reynolds.

Many in the auxiliary band are still learning to read music so the programme will start with some basic music like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for example and progress into some more challenging classical scores like Saturn by Gustuv Holst.

“We will showcase the music we have been working on all year starting with more simple arrangements. Some of the later pieces give our learners an idea of what they are working towards — and a bigger picture about the world of banding.”

About 18 musicians will be taking part with Mr Reynolds conducting. He will also keep the audience entertained in between the music with jokes and funny anecdotes about the band and the music.

■  St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church — Cobden Street Saturday October 7, 2pm to 3.30pm. Featuring the Gisborne Civic Auxilliary Brass Band $10 entry.
