Classical duo for a Sunday session

Classical guitarists Bruno Guedea and Christopher Everest are the stars of this weekend’s Sunday concert at Tairawhiti Museum.

The finalists of the 2020 Biennial New Zealand Classical Guitar Competition have come together to perform a collection of folk-inspired arrangements and modern compositions from Mexico, England and New Zealand.

Through music the pair will explore their individual pasts and shared New Zealand identity.

Guedea began learning guitar at age six with his father, Mexican-New Zealand award-winning writer and poet Rogelio Guedea.

By 15, he decided on classical guitar, which led to his enrolment and completion of a music pre-college degree at Colima University’s Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico.

Upon graduation, he auditioned to study at Victoria University’s New Zealand School of Music, where he is currently studying a Bachelor of Music under the supervision of New Zealand guitarists and academics Jane Curry and Owen Moriarty.

Throughout his classical guitar study, Guedea has taken part in masterclasses with accomplished guitarists from Croatia to Chile, winning awards in classical guitar competitions in New Zealand and Mexico.

Everest began learning the classical guitar in 2016, receiving lessons as a second study while studying jazz guitar at the New Zealand School of Music.

During this time, he has been fortunate to participate in masterclasses, picking up talents from virtuosos worldwide, and placing in classical guitar competitions.
