ART and music across at least two cultures come together at the Paul Nache Gallery tomorrow.

The opening of an exhibition of drawings by James Ormsby, which includes his large graphite and burnt carmine pigment work on paper, Mr A, coincides with the launch of the 2017 Gisborne International Music Competition.

Of Maori and Scottish ancestry, James Ormsby’s work expresses cross-cultural issues and contemporary interpretations of Maori culture.

This year’s GIMC entrants will be revealed during the Gisborne International Music Competition (GIMC) launch. The event includes a performance by a guest musician and GIMC regular.

The guest artist will be part of Q&A with gallery owner and GIMC board member Matt Clark, who sees an opportunity for “cross-pollination” between GIMC and the gallery on an international scale.

He plans to bring a new perspective and incorporate social media to promote wider interest in the Gisborne-based event, now in its 29th year.

“GIMC is a global award. How do we extend that?” Clark said.

“It’s an incredible competition so I want to enhance what they have done. The board wants the event to be more accessible.

“The point of difference is I’m coming with fresh ideas.”

People who enjoy the music performed at the competition generally have a love of visual art as well.

“The gallery offers them another opportunity to be part of a broad platform. My goal is get a sell-out final to the music competition.”

The launch will also offer people the opportunity to partner with one of this year’s GIMC entrants.

For those unable to attend the launch, but who would like to partner with a musician, let GIMC manager Mark La Roche know your instrument preference and he will pair you up.

The cost is $100 per musician.

You will receive an invitation to meet with your musician at the opening function at 7pm on November 26 and will be told when they are scheduled to perform throughout competition week.

“This is a great way for you to get to know one or more of the musicians entered in this year’s competition, and provide support when they take the stage,” La Roche said.
