Port commits to safe movement of goods

Eastland Port has joined an international port authorities' global initiative for safe and efficient movement of goods and shipping during the Covid-19 crisis.

Worldwide, 56 port authorities have agreed how they will work together facilitating maritime trade as the countries involved fight Covid-19.

The independent chairman of the New Zealand Port Company CEO Group, Charles Finny, signed the international declaration on behalf of New Zealand ports.

“Along with 55 other worldwide port authorities, all New Zealand ports have committed to the safe and efficient movement of goods and shipping during the Covid-19 crisis,” Eastland Port chief operating officer Andrew Gaddum said.

“As a key contributor to our region's economy, the safe and efficient operation of the port is vital.

“Since Eastland Port was granted a dispensation from the Government to resume export operations during the last few days of Alert Level 4, we have been working under strict protocols to ensure the safety of all staff working on port.

“This global initiative is fantastic news for Eastland Port, as it upholds the protocols that we already have in place, and ensures all ports around the world are working to the same standards.”

New Zealand's maritime industry regulator, Maritime NZ, welcomed and commended the declaration, which was initiated by Singapore.

Port authorities that have signed the international declaration have committed to safely keeping global supply chains and trade going and allowing merchant ships to load and unload, coordinating so they can quickly share information about, and experiences of, combating Covid-19.

The declaration also commits port authorities to continuing to adopt best practices for shore personnel and ship crew, safe handling of cargoes and measures taken in dealing with Covid-19 cases.
