Lotto draw raises $11.7m

Saturday's special Lotto draw raised $11.7 million for Gisborne and other cyclone-affected regions.

“We'd like to thank New Zealanders for getting behind this special draw for cyclone relief,” Lotto NZ chief executive Chris Lyman said.

“The support has been incredible and will make a real difference to people and communities impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle,” said Lotto NZ chief executive Chris Lyman.

“It has been a privilege for Lotto NZ to host this special draw, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the cyclone.”

The $15 million jackpot special draw was the 10th Powerball Must be Won draw in Lotto NZ's history, with half of all tickets sales on Lotto, Powerball or Strike going to support those impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Powerball was won by a player from Canterbury who collected $15.5 million — $15 million from Powerball First Division and $500,000 from Lotto First Division.

Internal Affairs Minister Barbara Edmonds thanked all those who took part.

“In a time of need, New Zealanders rally together to help each other. This is a fantastic effort and I want to thank everyone across the country who contributed to the draw.

“The damage from Cyclone Gabrielle is extensive and we still have a long road ahead.

“This will make a huge difference in helping people and businesses recover and build back better.

“In addition to the draw, the Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal Fund has also raised over $830,000 for communities.

“Every little bit helps and it has been humbling to see people continue to make donations and offers of assistance.

“While we are only at the start of recovery, I want to assure communities that we are committed to working closely with regions to provide long-term support.

“This funding will be there to support their needs and locally-led solutions,” she said.
