A LEADING New Zealand bank says it will continue to monitor Gisborne’s regional economy closely, even though it will no longer publish the region’s statistical trends for public consumption.

ANZ Bank stopped issuing its quarterly Regional Trends Survey last year and ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie said that was due to a combination of factors.

“Statistics NZ are now producing more regional statistics and we also decided to invest economic resources in other areas.

“We still monitor regional indicators and the performance of regions. We also have an extensive travel programme and do numerous events in the regions.

“We employ a dedicated statistician and agri economist to ensure we collate and analyse a broad range of data and also keep on top of the rural sector, which is critically important for the regions and New Zealand more broadly.

“Our agri-focus publication is a massive 40-page piece of work.

“ANZ remains the largest non-government producer of economic statistics in New Zealand, which is a huge investment on our behalf.”

Mr Bagrie said he continued to run a team that looked at the overall picture from both “the top down and the bottom up”.
