The creation of a super council encompassing the whole of the Western Bay of Plenty received a huge political push today from Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby.
Mr Crosby used his state-of-the-city speech to the Bay's political and business leaders to promote "round two" of local-government reorganisation.
His speech foreshadowed amalgamation becoming a pivotal issue for October's council elections.
Mr Crosby had previously been a passive supporter of amalgamation, saying it would eventually happen as the Tauranga and Western Bay councils got used to working closer together to benefit ratepayers.
