Cameron McMillan
Deputy Head of Sport

Cameron McMillan is Deputy Head of Sport for NZME. He has been a sports journalist for 20 years and was on duty in 2011, when the All Blacks put things right.

I'm Cameron McMillan and I have more than 20 years of experience in sports journalism. I started out writing in the College Sports section of the Hawke's Bay Today as a high school student where I became hooked on reporting and have been fortunate enough to make a career out of covering sport. I’ve had varied roles at NZME from editing the sports section of the Herald to blogging live sporting events and am currently the Deputy Head of Sport. I've been there for the lows and highs of New Zealand sport - in the stands as a fan when the All Blacks lost the 2007 quarter-final in Cardiff and thankfully in the press box at Eden Park four years later, trying to calmly live blog the action, when they beat France to reclaim the World Cup. Though All Whites-Bahrain remains the best 'I was there' moment. Over my career, I’ve interviewed All Blacks and Olympic athletes, but the most inspirational interview was of the late Travis Roy, who suffered a life-changing incident while playing ice hockey. The most surreal interview was talking to rower Shaun Quincey while he was in the middle of the Tasman Sea on a solo journey from Australia to New Zealand. I believe in a strong lede, accuracy, a solid short game and no cheering in a press box.
