Clarity and minimalism is what Auckland interior designer Peter Bromhead likes about Danish furniture.
It's a longstanding affection and one which led to him being granted Denmark's highest award, Prince Henrik's Medal of Honour, in recognition of his services to trade relations between the two countries.
Better known as a cartoonist than for his day job as an interior designer, Mr Bromhead has imported and used Danish furniture in his work for many years.
"Many of these pieces are truly the antiques of the future," Mr Bromhead said of the Danish tables, chairs and sofas which adorn his Parnell showroom.
It seems others here agree as, according to him, New Zealand is third only to Denmark and Iceland in per capita sales of Danish furniture.
Mr Bromhead has also incorporated the Danish influence into his own furniture designs - furniture that, he stresses, does not copy Danish designs but simply follows its philosophy which places function at the centre of the design.
New Zealand designs suffered from too much "ornamentation and flossy things which date too quickly," Mr Bromhead said.
Although he does concede that things are getting better and that "at the end of the day, taste is in the eye of the beholder."
