Baseball's single-season home-run king Mark McGwire decided against testing his value on the open market and yesterday signed a two-year $US30 million ($69.36 million) contract extension with the St Louis Cardinals.
McGwire, 37, will receive $US14 million next year and $US16 million the following year. The slugger is due to earn $US9 million this season in the final year of a three-year deal he signed when he was traded from Oakland.
The new pact also calls for McGwire - who did his own negotiations - to receive an attendance bonus of $US2 for every fan in excess of 2.8 million the Cardinals attract to Busch Stadium.
"I'm paid very well to do what I want to do. If you can't live on $US15 million a year there's something wrong with you."
