Former Mid-Canterbury trainer Derek Dynes could make a triumphant return to his old home territory tomorrow.
Now based in Winton, Dynes travels north with one major assignment in mind - the major spoils in the $10,000 Hororata Cup at that club's annual meeting at Ashburton.
The brilliant form of Soky's Atom mare Flash Tactics this season suggests a win is on the cards.
Flash Tactics will be reunited with leading Mid-Canterbury driver Rick May and this combination have struck up a good rapport.
Indeed, Flash Tactics is developing into something of a cups specialist. The mare blitzed her rivals in the Roxburgh Cup on January 2. Given a short let-up, Flash Tactics resumed in the Wyndham Cup last week.
Usually a swift beginner, Flash Tactics missed away and was a forlorn hope on the home turn. It was a tremendous effort to run open class horse Anne's Boy so close.
The overall standard of the Hororata Cup field is probably tougher but it will be a major surprise if Flash Tactics isn't prominent.
Most opposition to the visitor could come from the Lauriston trained Jake The Mus who will have the services of Ken Barron.
Red Man and Morrisette give Peter Jones a strong hand, while Joan's Gift and Dashing Dave have been racing kindly.
The backmarker Georgi Zhukov is set a difficult assignment off 20m but is highly talented.
A top field of fillies has been engaged in the other feature event, a heat of the Nevele R series.
My Party Doll, who caused a major upset in the sales' series final, looks sure to be prominent again. The Geoff Dunn trained filly won't be at such fancy odds again however.
