"In August 2016, I will be embarking on a journey beginning somewhere in Asia and heading in a generally westward direction for an indefinite period of time."
He wanted to have cultural experiences and climb mountains, the Daily Mail reports.
"And maybe, just maybe, in the course of my travels I'll come to some sort of conclusion as to who I am and what I want to do with my life. And so begins my journey beyond the horizon."
After he was found, his mother Elizabeth said the family was "very thankful and grateful" he'd been found and for the search effort.
Earlier, his father and brother travelled to the region to join the search for the 25-year-old backpacker.
Andrew Gaskell went hiking on October 18 and hadn't been in touch with family or friends since.
He indicated at the time he'd be walking in the area - which has poor mobile phone coverage and is known for its caves and vast formations - for about a week.
Acting Inspector Darren Latham on Monday said Tasmania Police were liaising with Malaysian police during the search.
Police were alerted to Gaskell's disappearance by family members living in Tasmania who had been in constant contact with the solo traveller during his overseas trip, Act Insp Latham told reporters.
Gaskell grew up in Hobart but has lived in Cairns for the past three years.
Volunteers from a rural village that had contact with Mr Gaskell before he disappeared had also joined the search in the national park over the weekend.
Gaskell's family on Sunday said they were 'overwhelmed' by the Malay people's kindness and generosity of spirit.
