LIMA, Peru (AP) Peruvian police say a gunman shot and killed a mayoral candidate in the world's No. 1 coca-growing region.
Lider Villazana was the second mayoral candidate in Peru's Oct. 5 local and regional elections to be gunned down in as many months.
Both men were running in cocaine-producing regions. No arrests have been made.
The 49-year-old Villazana was making a third run for the mayor's office in San Martin de Pangoa in the Apurimac and Ene river valley. Planes from Bolivia arrive in the valley daily to pick up partially refined cocaine.
Local police chief Col. Roger Arista said Villazana was in the doorway of his office when he was shot Friday night. He died on his way to the hospital.
