An American man has pleaded guilty to smuggling 1.3kg of cocaine into New Zealand.

Customs stopped Mark Henderson at the Auckland International Airport on Tuesday after he arrived from Chile.

It is understood the 41-year-old smuggled the cocaine inside condoms inside his stomach.

He appeared at the Auckland District Court today.

Henderson's lawyer Graham Newell said the exact weight and the purity of the drug could be at issue.

Yesterday Customs says Henderson was found to be concealing 62 pellets of the Class A drug.

He will be sentenced in July.
