In a shock move yesterday outstanding galloper Rebel was retired.
An x-ray of a flexor tendon showed a slight tear and co-owner Val Langsford instantly decided to end Rebel's career.
Rebel had only just arrived at Moira Murdoch's Waiuku beach training establishment after being prepared briefly by Langsford following the recent death of her husband Ron.
Veterinarian David Spencer put the chance of the tendon troubling Rebel following a spell at only 25 per cent, but Langsford said it was not fair to risk the horse.
"He's an extremely gross horse and I know how much work would be required to get him fit after an enforced spell. It would not be fair on him."
Rebel showed signs of tendon trouble after returning from an Australian campaign last spring. He was fine going into his dashing first-up win in the Montana Wines Challenge Stakes two weeks ago, but the race may have put pressure on the problem.
"It's highly likely the race stirred up the problem area," said Murdoch.
