Kelly Scarrow reckons her knitting group should be up for an award. But its her own passion for knitting, books and charity that has seen the Wanganui woman nominated for a Pride of New Zealand Award.
Community Spirit is a fitting category for her nomination.
A librarian at the Gonville Library, Kelly runs several book clubs. But what has won her praise is her work with the Gonville Library Knitting group.
Kelly has run the group for about three years and in that time the group has donated countless pieces of woollen clothing to charity.
Tawhero School pupils have been kitted out in scarves and slippers, Plunket received blankets and now items are being made for Birthright Whanganui. Kelly runs the group every Wednesday morning with up to 30 people. "It was about bringing people together and enjoying a craft and turning the craft into something we could give back to the community," Kelly said.
