The Wanganui representative women's masters bowls team etched their name into history by winning the coveted regional trophy at the Paraparaumu Beach Bowling Club on Tuesday.
It was the first time Wellington had not been victorious since the competition's inception in 2000.
Played over two days, the tournament featured representative teams from Manawatu, Kapiti, Wellington, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and, of course, Wanganui.
Teams consisted of fours, triples, pairs and singles. The Wanganui team included: Shirley de Barr (singles), Pam Burgess and Deanna Shepherd (pairs), Ruth White, Ngaire McAuley and Carol Morpeth (triples) and Sadie Head, Diane Martin, Dot Belliss and Robin Evans (fours). The team was selected and managed by Cynthia Adams. The triples team went through unbeaten over the five rounds, while the fours had just one loss, the pairs two and the singles three.
They finished on 28 points, three ahead of Manawatu, four up on Hutt Valley, and eight ahead of defending champions Wellington.
