A foot and cycle bridge from Upokongaro to the west side of the Whanganui River is a great idea, Avoca Hotel owner Pat Tasker says.
He'd heard it rumoured, but thought the bridge abutment was to be somewhere near the village's church rather than downstream from the Upokongaro Stream bridge.
Quite a few cyclists on the Mountains to Sea trail pass through Upokongaro in summer, he said. Occasionally they cover the distance to Whanganui - deemed unsafe on State Highway 4 - by riverboat.
A bridge to Upokongaro and cycle track on the west bank could also bring Whanganui cyclists to the village on day trips, Mr Tasker said.
"If it was like a natural variation point, a focal point, I think it's a great idea."
