Whanganui's Dog Pound could be on the move ... but will noise annoy its new neighbours?
A noise expert will assess potential impacts on residents of moving Whanganui's dog pound to Airport Road.
The Whanganui District Council has engaged an acoustic specialist to work alongside an architect to minimise noise emissions, a report to Tuesday's Property and Community Services committee said.
The current pound in RidgwaySt is long past its use-by date with dilapidated premises and requires significant costs to maintain over the next 10 years. It also breaches noise regulations and welfare standards.
The Whanganui District Council has allocated $450,000 for a new animal welfare centre and has investigated various potential sites, including one at Balgownie, Castlecliff. The preferd site is on council-owned land near the city's waste water treatment plant off Airport Rd.
Results from the noise investigation will come back to council in four months along with a estimated project cost.
Councillor Charlie Anderson asked for a report into what other sites had been investigated and why they were not suitable. He said the Airport Rd site was the wrong location but did not elaborate.
At an earlier meeting several councillors expressed concern about the possible impact on residents of moving the pound to Airport Road.
Kate Joblin said she wanted to see some evidence in the form of noise testing to be certain that residents won't be adversely impacted while Deputy Mayor Jenny Duncan said council had dragged the chain long enough and urged council to get on with it.
