Homeowners should take steps to store or tie down backyard gear to limit the chance of flying debris striking power lines during expected high winds on Sunday, Powerco has warned.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said strong winds associated with a low pressure system were expected to hit Taranaki, Whanganui and, possibly, Manawatu in the early hours of Sunday.
"Trampolines and outdoor furniture become missiles and get tangled in power lines during gale force winds," he said.
Downed lines were dangerous and must be treated as live at all times. People should keep clear of them and call Powerco on 0800 27 27 27 if they see lines down or trees tangled in them.
"Falling trees and flying debris are the greatest threat to electricity supply remaining intact," he said.
