Three young sailors from Kai Iwi School are 2016 Intermediate Schools Sailing champions after battling wind and rain on Pauri Lake on April 2.

Coaches Sheryl Ryland and Shawn Thomas had been working with Izaac Coe, Leo Jones and Heath McKenzie for just five weeks before the championship and Mrs Ryland said she couldn't be more proud of them.

"They have mastered the basic sailing skills in all weather conditions and wind strengths, thoroughly enjoying every minute of it," she said.

Each school entered three sailors in the Education Services Sailing Cup and their combined scores determined their team placing.

Mrs Ryland said Izaac got away to a great start and maintained a good lead for the entire first race.

The Kai Iwi team were in second place at the end of the heats but came in first, second and fourth in the final race. The Wanganui Intermediate team took second and the Brunswick School team third.
