A man who "hasn't even received demerit points" was caught drink driving in Gonville.
Jeffrey Gilbert Johnson told police he had "just come from around the corner and wasn't going to hurt anybody" when he was found to be driving with 818mcg of alcohol on his breath, police prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Willemsen said. The convictable limit is 400mcg.
Johnson pleaded guilty in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday to driving with excess breath alcohol on April 2.
The first offender was a "contributing member towards society" who did fundraising work, assisted his partially blind neighbour, and worked with a special needs child, defence lawyer Stephanie Burlace said.
She said her client was "embarrassed" and suggested the mandatory driving disqualification period on its own to be sufficient punishment.
