When the Wanganui Fire Service opened the doors of the refurbished station in Maria Pl to the public, it had little idea of how popular that decision would prove.
But between 10am and 3pm on Saturday an estimated 1500-2000 people poured through the facility taking in plenty of live and static displays.
Acting assistant area manager Craig Gardiner, said they were overwhelmed with the turnout.
"They came through in a constant stream all day and no doubt the good weather helped in that regard," Mr Gardiner said.
The kitchen fire simulator and home sprinkler display especially brought in for the open day were very popular as were a display by the ladder truck and a car rescue. "We had something happening every 30 minutes during the day," he said.
