The sun shone and the crowds flocked to the Whanganui Vintage Weekend events.
Thousands of people attended the events, from the Caboodle that was held in Victoria Ave on Saturday, to the Riverside Festival yesterday.
Vintage Weekend marketing co-ordinator Sally Jane Smith said she was delighted with how the weekend had gone.
She said around 5000 people attended the Caboodle, or street festival, including 250 people who gathered to watch classic movies on a big screen erected in the middle of Victoria Ave.
"We had 200-plus cars at the Class Cluster Cruise, which was a great success," Ms Smith said.
Also held on Saturday night, 60 people attended the Rockabilly Boundless Banquet, an al fresco dining event held on Victoria Ave. Guests were served entrees from Spice Guru, mains from Element, and dessert from La Strada.
"All the guests raved about the food and the atmosphere, and many said they would be back next year."
Yesterday morning, about 100 vintage cars and motorbikes set off from Moutoa Gardens for the annual Burma Rally and returned around lunchtime.
Among the participants were Norm and Raewyn Cook of Palmerston North, who came along in their 1928 Ford Model A Tudor.
Mr Cook said the car had been pulled out of a swamp near Waipawa, in Central Hawke's Bay, in 1969 and he had helped to restore it.
The couple and their gleaming car are regulars on the rally.
"It's a lot of fun. We really enjoy it for the friendships we make - we're all a bunch of nutters," Mr Cook said.
Also yesterday morning, a special - but brief - moment was enjoyed by dozens of onlookers when the PS Waimarie, the steam train and a Tiger Moth plane piloted by Richmond Harding, passed under, across and over the Aramoho rail bridge respectively.
In the afternoon, the action switched to the banks of the Whanganui River for the Riverside Festival, with hundreds of people turning up to enjoy music, stalls and sunshine.
As well as locals, the festival had attracted people from Taranaki, Hastings, Wellington and Palmerston North - even the United States.
The weather came to the party, with mostly fine weather both days. The temperature reached 29C on Saturday - the hottest of the summer so far.
Vintage Weekend continues today with the soapbox derby on Drews Ave. Racing begins at 9.45am.
