A smarty pants nicked a pair of trousers off a police officer ... fortunately, he wasn't wearing them at the time.
Jordana Haenga told the Whanganui District Court this week that she stole the officer's pants from a police car "to be smart".
"I could make some comment about policemen losing their trousers but I won't, sir," defence lawyer Stephen Ross told the judge with a grin.
Haenga, aged 24, and her 4-year-old daughter were being dropped home from the court in a patrol car on June 18 when she swiped the uniform pants, which were in the back seat.
She denied having the pants when asked, police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Butler said.
