Wanganui city streetlights will be changed over the next few years, with the present sodium lights making way for cost-saving LED lights.
And the result could be a near 50 per cent reduction in the city's lighting bill.
These lights have been trialled on the City Bridge and in Portal, Dublin, Ingestre, Purnell and Glasgow streets.
Now the Wanganui District Council's operations and reporting committee has recommended the LED (light-emitting diode) lights be fitted across the city.
Daniel Cairncross, council roading traffic safety engineer, told the committee the current sodium bulbs lasted about four years, while the LED fittings can last up to five times as long.
