The Easter Bunny isn't bringing eggs to Wanganui this year, but a basketful of handsome, local chaps.
Retailers in downtown Wanganui have come up with a new way to combine late-night shopping with a charity fundraiser - and it will take place in the city centre tonight.
Between 6pm and 9pm the cream of local manhood will be adding chivalrous charm to the shopping experience in the first "Mr Whanganui" fundraiser.
Shoppers can buy Mr Whanganui $1 bills from stands on the corner of Victoria Ave and Ridgway St, Majestic Square, and Guyton St and Victoria Ave.
They can then check out the men on offer at retailers around the central business district, each one representing a different charity. Shoppers will vote for their favourite Mr Whanganui by giving him their dollar bills.
At the end of the night each man's hoard will be counted, and the riches will be donated to his charity of choice. And, of course, the richest man on show will be crowned Mr Whanganui 2014.
Mainstreet Wanganui has contributed a further $1000 to the fundraising cause, so Mr Whanganui will win a further $500 for charity, with second place earning $300, and the third man $200.
"This promotion brings window shopping to a whole new level," said Mainstreet Wanganui marketing manager Elise Goodge.
"We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from retailers who just want to get on board and raise money for worthy local causes."
