Wanganui could not enter a national competition to win the fastest internet in the Southern Hemisphere even if we wanted to.
The Gigatown competition, being held by telecommunications company Chorus, would provide one New Zealand town with a peak internet speed of one gigabit per second.
Wanganui District Council spokeswoman Cass Alexander said the city was ineligible to enter the competition as Chorus was not installing Wanganui's ultra-fast broadband network, Crown Fibre Holdings was.
However, Wanganui was named a Smart 21 intelligent community for 2013 and 2014, she said.
Ms Alexander said Wanganui's ultra-fast broadband network would peak at a speed of 100 megabits per second.
