Wanganui District Council will meet tonight to decide what steps, if any, it will take to keep serial sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson from being placed on parole in the district.
Some councillors have called for the council to resist the decision by the parole board to release Wilson to a house on Pauri Rd, Kaitoke, just outside the prison grounds.
Wilson has served 18 years of a 21-year sentence for sexual offences against women, children and animals, including rape, stupefying, wilful ill-treatment of a child and bestiality.
Although the parole board has assessed him as being at high risk, Wilson must be released from prison by September 1. Seventeen conditions have been attached to his release.
Tonight's extraordinary meeting was called for during a public meeting on Sunday, organised by councillors Michael Laws and Ray Stevens, and follows a public meeting last night that was attended by staff from Corrections and police, and about 270 people.
