Opaki keep match tight

Martinborough edged out Opaki 5-4 in a titanic struggle to their Wairarapa Tennis Association regional one match on Saturday.

It was Martinborough who had the better of the singles, taking a 4-2 advantage thanks to wins by Tim Pickering, Matt Nicholson, Andy Darling and Rhona Lovell. Chris Davidson and Katie Wyeth won for Opaki.

In doubles, however, it was Opaki who called the tune, with Katie Wyeth and Brett Dymond and Jon McNab and Charlotte Mossman combining for victories there. The sole win for Martinborough came from Nicholson and Pickering.

Results, Martinborough names first:-

Men's singles: Tim Pickering beat Brett Dymond 6-7, 6-3, 6-4; Matt Nicholson beat Stu Wyeth 6-3, 6-2; Andy Darling beat Jon McNab 7-5, 6-1; Campbell Venning lost to Chris Davidson 5-7, 1-6.

Women's singles: Rhona Lovell beat Charlotte Mossman 6-2, 6-0; Libby Peterson lost to Katie Wyeth 2-6, 0-6.

Men's doubles: Nicholson and Pickering beat Davidson and Wyeth 7-5, 6-1.

Combined doubles: Darling and Lovell lost to Dymond and Wyeth 4-6, 3-6; Venning and Peterson lost to Mossman and McNab 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
