YOU don't have to be great at something to receive a Queen's Birthday honour, though it does help if you're good at what you do.
What I always get the sense of, with the honours, is that a person has an aspect, a culture, of greatness about them.
Add to that the length of time in their service, job or their standing in the community, and you've got the makings of an award recipient.
Most people I've interviewed for New Year's and Queen's Birthday honours enjoy what they do tremendously and are at their best when they're doing it.
What makes that person great is they constantly step beyond the required agenda, far beyond the job description, because they know what they do is good, and things are better when they go beyond a standard role.
