The New Year's Day Millennium edition of the Herald will carry a special classified advertising section for ordinary New Zealanders to leave a permanent record of their presence at the dawn of the new century.
"Reach Through Time" is a section for personal messages to your descendants, or simply a way of saying "We were here."
An example might be:
"SMITH, John (a 45-year-old teacher) and Stephanie (a 42-year-old computer operator) live in Albany with their children, Janet (12) and James (9), who are pupils at Albany Primary School. Their hope for the future is that their descendants will live in the same clean, green environment they enjoy."
Or:
"JONES, Helen. I am a 25-year-old scanner operator. I am single and live in Manurewa. My parents are Jack and Jill Jones who live in Hamilton with my brother Jack, who is a 20-year-old student at Waikato University. One day I will have a family and my hopes for my children will be that they have the will to dream and the freedom to realise those dreams."
The section will be sent to the National Library, Auckland Library and Auckland Museum for safekeeping.
A copy will also be lodged in a time vault at St Matthew-in-the-City.
A special advertising rate has been set for the feature, starting at $20 for a five-line insertion.
You can send your messages by phoning (09) 308-0001 after 1.30 pm today, faxing (09) 373-6533 or at www.nzherald.co.nz/future on the Internet.
