With more than 47.8 million followers, US popstar Taylor Swift is the most followed person on Instagram. Having started her career in country music, she crossed over to pop in 2008 with the launch of her album Fearless. She is one of the best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 40 million albums and 130 million single downloads.

With more than 46.9 million followers, Kim Kardashian is the most followed of the Kardashians. Having achieved notoriety as a friend of Paris Hilton, Kim became famous largely because of a leaked sex tape made with a former boyfriend (much like her friend Paris) which led to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reality show. She is now a fashion designer, entrepreneur, model and wife of rap star Kanye West.

The platinum selling recording artist Beyonce Knowles has the third most popular Instagram account with more than 46.2 million followers. Her career has seen her sell millions of albums and win 17 Grammies. Her attempt to become a success in film saw her star in Austin Powers and The Pink Panther. She now focuses primarily on her music.

One of the few most popular instagrammers famous for something other than selfies, Selena Gomez's (US popstar and Disney Channel actor) 44.7 million followers are regularly updated on her single life following her breakup with Justin Bieber, as well as her various fashion shoots.

The fifth most followed Instagram account is owned by Ariana Grande (43.7 million followers), who began her career on Broadway before acting in a show on Nickelodeon which subsequently launched her music career. She recently sang in London's Victoria's Secret fashion show in which she was also hit on the head by a lingerie model's angel wings.
