An enthusiastic group of the Eltham community has been working on a project to save the Eltham School arches. Earlier this year the Ministry of Education deemed the arches an earthquake risk, tagging them for demolition. In May 2015 a public meeting was held to raise awareness and gain support for saving this last piece of the original A Block building, constructed in 1925.
As a result, the Save The Eltham School Arches (STESA) committee was formed and has been having regular meetings with the aim of saving, re-establishing and maintaining the structure for future generations.
A wine and cheese evening was held last month to make a presentation to potential financial supporters of the project
It is planned for the arches to be restored into an upright position in an enhanced setting that will benefit both the school and the community.
Completing the project is a challenge for those involved and any support available from former pupils and the local community is gratefully welcomed.
