The youth group Waewaerua, led by Maioha Tokoaua, ended their holiday programme at the Whakaahurangi Marae on a high, hosting kaumatua with a specially prepared meal and kapa haka performance on Friday night.
The group and Maioha had been living at the marae for the holiday period.
The two weeks was spent teaching students about Maori culture, including kapa haka, weaving, protocol and preparing traditional food.
I couldn't be prouder of the students, they have listened, learned and performed with pride
On Friday night the special evening was attended by kaumatua and members of the Whakaahurangi Marae community. Students welcomed guests with a traditional powhiri and then served them with a hangi that they had prepared, including eel that the students caught themselves and smoked.
