Tracy Collier, operations manager for Taranaki Hockey, is excited by the possibility of more international matches coming to Stratford. "Hockey NZ are already talking about coming back to Stratford this year to host a Black Sticks International test and hold some training camps. They haven't given me any dates but have said they do have a team in mind."
The success of the Oceania Cup in Stratford at the end of last October means our event is now being used by Hockey New Zealand and the Oceania Hockey Federation as a benchmark for other regions in delivering similar events.
"Thanks to the financial support from the Taranaki Electricity Trust (TET), we are able to further develop the sport in the region," says Tracy, "which in turn helps us to raise the profile of the sport and encouraging more people to become part of the hockey community."
TET support means Taranaki Hockey is able to employ more staff focused on developing the sport in the region.
"We can now give our development officer some support and get some extra delivery personnel which will focus on the TET georgraphical area."
Programmes such as the Active Post Small Sticks programme have been "well received" by schools, Tracy says and she is looking forward to being able to bring more opportunities for young people to experience the thrills of hockey.
Tracy says that thanks to the Oceania Cup being enjoyed by so many people, hockey has gained in popularity in the region and she hopes to see that continue.
"With the support of TET and the people in Stratford, I am confident that the TET Hockey Turf in Stratford will have many more international level players on it in future."
