A man has been arrested and charged with two counts of assault, following a fire at a Christmas party in central Auckland overnight.
The 26-year-old from Auckland, has appeared before the District Court, and has been remanded on bail to appear again next Friday.
The charges relate to an incident at a Hawaiian staff Christmas party on the fifth floor of the Quay West Tower when a man's grass skirt caught alight in the toilets.
Detectives investigating the case said the man is in hospital in a critical condition, and a woman, who is believed to have tried to put out the fire, is undergoing surgery for burns.
