Hurricane Strike, a 2-year-old candidate for Te Awamutu on Saturday, showed a deceptive amount of speed in training at Matamata yesterday.
On a firm all-weather track, Hurricane Strike went 1000m in 1:1.4, the last 600 effortlessly in 36.5. Race rival Class Eulogy joined Solar Shower for 1000 in 1:4.6, the 600 in 38. Solar Shower went 1200 in 1:19.
Maori Princess also impressed over 1000 in 1:4.2, the 600 in 36.2. Count Cristo put his usual dash into 1200 in 1:22.4, the 600 in 40.8.
Last-start winner Isle Floorem covered 1200m in 1:21, the 600 in 38.6. Dundeal did 1200, 20m out on a soft course proper, in 1:23.8, the 600 in 41.8.
Trentham candidate Dvorack ran an easy 1000m on a firm sand in 1:7.2, the 600 in 39.5. Fella Me Lad was kept to 1:11 for 1000 and 39.6 from the 600.
At Takanini, Goldory underlined his fitness for Te Awamutu with a smart 1000m on a heavy No 2 grass in 1:5.7, the 600 in 39.1.
Hangover Harry galloped 1200m in 1:23.2, the 1000 in 1:6.7 and 600 in 39.9. Race rival Te Poi Spirit looked near his best when running the last 1200 of 1600 in 1:22.1, the 600 in 41.5.
Brave Cheyenne went fast early over 1200m in 1:19.4, the 600 in 40.6.
Lemon Eyes, on the outside of a soft course proper, and Sir Albert, on the No 1 grass, were the only horses who worked at speed at Avondale.
Both were impressive. Lemon Eyes strolled over 1000m in 1:9.8, the 600 in 40.9. Sir Albert dashed 600 in 40.7.
Te Atatu Chap showed he was on target for the Te Awamutu Cup with a smart 1000m in 1:3.7 on a soft No 1 grass at Te Rapa. He came from the 600 in 36.2.
Country Fair worked freely over 1200m in 1:18, the 600 in 39.6. Just Love Me, who shows promise, scampered 800 in 49, the 600 in 36.8.
Te Awamutu candidate Cervant impressed 10m out on a soft No 2 grass at Cambridge by running the last 1000m of 1200 in 1:9, the 600 in 41.
The Rented Mule also excelled over 1000m, taking 1:8, the 600 in 40.
Race The Tide was the smartest at Te Awamutu, sprinting 1000m with a Zephyr Ace gelding 20m out on a holding No 1 grass in 1:4.5, the 600 in 39.7.
Others timed for 1000m were Eyeno and Tallarook, 1:5 (38.8); Mazurka, 1:7.7 (39.7), Sky Cove and Danzapride, 1:7.2 (39.8); Judette, 1:5.2 (39.3), The Warrior and Florentine, 1:8 (40.4) and La Vance, 1:7.8 (40.2).
Le Rah went once round, the final 1000m in 1:8.6 and 600 in 41.5.
